BSNL to start broadband Internet service before month-end

TIRUCHI, DEC.24. The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited will introduce broadband Internet service in the Tiruchi Telecom district before this month-end, according to the General Manager (Development), BSNL, Tiruchi, A. Balraj.

Speaking at an open house session here recently, Mr. Balraj said the service would provide high speed round the clock Internet connections to subscribers. Currently the BSNL had 10,287 Internet subscribers in the Tiruchi Telecom district. It had also set up Internet dhabas in 45 block headquarters in the telecom district, he said.

The BSNL would soon set up a Call Centre here as part of its measures to improve customer service. The BSNL had already commissioned, DOT SOFT, an in-house software network at a cost of Rs.5 crores, which contributed to improvement in customer service. It also introduced an electronic clearance scheme.

Various value-added services such as dynamic lock, abbreviated dialling, detailed billing, call transfer facility, call wait and hot live facilities had been extended free of cost to subscribers under electronic exchanges. A caller line identification protocol had also now been made a free value-added service.

The BSNL identified Aranthangi, Puthanatham, Jayamkondam, Panchapatti, Senthurai, M. Paramathai, Thuraiyur, Perambalur, Ponnamaravathy, Illupur and Lalgudi for providing MSC Wireless Local Loop service. Steps were also being taken to expand the E-10B exchange at Mutharasanallur.

Referring to mobile services, Mr. Balraj said there were 68,828 pre-paid and 25,096 post-paid connections in the Tiruchi telecom district. The telecom major planned to put additional towers for improving connectivity and reach its mobile services in the following places under its fourth phase of expansion: Aranthangi, Ariyalur, Jayamkondam, Keeranur, Kulithalai, Manapparai, Musiri, Perambalur, Ponnamaravathy and Thuraiyur short distance charging areas (SDCAs) and Karur (rural and urban), Pudukottai (rural) and Tiruchi (rural).

In Tiruchi rural, additional towers would be set up at Bharathidasan University areas, Inam Kulathur, Nagamangalam, Navalurkuttapattu, Pettavaithalai, Pullampadi, Purathakudi and Valadi, Mr. Balraj added.
